"Make Me" by Lee Child is the latest entry in the long-running Jack Reacher series. For those who have not read any of the books, Reacher is a former military policeman, now discharged from the army and wandering the country, homeless by choice, although Reacher would call it freedom. Being on the fringes of society, he runs into trouble more often than not, and from that trouble is where the stories arise.
My goal is to try to avoid spoilers in this blog, particularly with books that are relatively new (I'm more likely to "spoil" a Hugo winner from the 1970's than a novel released in the last year or so). Accordingly, I'm not going to go into a lengthy discussion of the plot. Reacher arrives in a town called "Mother's Rest" off of a train - he had seen the name on a map and it intrigued him. Curious about the name, he asks around but none of the townfolk know or will talk about it. Add in a case of mistaken identity and suffice it to say that in true Reacher fashion, he creates his own brand of mayhem and the central problem of the story gets resolved.
All in all, I enjoyed this outing. I think that this book, in concert with the last few have served to humanize the force of nature that Reacher becomes at times. Also, "Make Me" covers some interesting moral territory over the course of the story, adding to the tension.
Rating: 7.5/10 - If you like the genre, it's worth reading.
