Brief Synopsis: Book III of the "Great Houses" trilogy in the larger Dune universe. This series takes place in the years before the original Dune books by Frank Herbert, setting the stage for the events of "Dune" and the books that Frank Herbert wrote that follow. In this book, Emperor Shaddam's Spice War comes to a head, tensions between House Atriedes and House Harkonnen ramp up, and the Fremen begin to assert themselves on Dune.
What I liked: House Corrino continues nicely from the previous installments and moves at a pretty brisk pace considering it is the third of three 600+ page novels telling a complicated story. Characters get filled out nicely. And the final scene featuring the Fremen is a thing of beauty as well.
What I didn't: Like any novel this size, there are a few places where the action lags. Other than that, there's not much to complain about.
Why you should read this: At the very least you should read the previous two books in the Great Houses series, as they are a nice complement to the Dune universe.
